Ceramic foam filters

Ceramic foam filters filter solid inclusions from the molten metal and are generally integrated in the casting launder system between the degasser and the casting machine. The systems can be supplied with a gas preheater to quickly preheat the filter plate which is always required prior to the start of each cast to ensure that the filter plate will be usable over its entire surface and no channelling in the filter plate that would cause premature blocking.
Electrical heating systems that can be used to keep the metal liquid in the filter bowl in-between drops are also available. Keeping metal in the filter bowl in-between drops with the filter plate submerged prolongs the useful life of the filter plate which otherwise has to be discarded after each drop.
The latter way of using the filter plate for more than one drop depends on the initial cleanliness of the metal and the quality requirements for the end product. The filter plates that are used in the systems are sized in accordance with the flow rate requirements of the casting machine. Twin filter systems are available which are above all applied in continuous casting systems. Switching between the two filters of such a system allows to continue the casting process while exchanging the filter plates when required, one after the other.
